If the buzz is to be believed, Chief National Coach for the Indian Badminton team Pullela Gopichand is going to be nominated as Rajya Sabha member towards the end of this week. The Chief Ministers of both the Telugu states have accepted the proposal.
The government picks up members for the Rajya sabha who will be nominated by the President at the instance of the Council of Ministers as they have outshined in their particular fields.
Gopichand was born in Prakasham district but grew up in Hyderabad. So, his nomination had to be accepted by the governments of both the telugu states.
The Padma Bushan awardee won the All England Open Badminton Championships in 2001 becoming the second Indian to achieve this feat after Prakash Padukone. After retiring from his badminton career, he started Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad. He is the coach for Olympic silver medalist P V Sindhu and also coached Olympic bronze medalist Saina Nehwal.
The upper house in the past week discussed the continued absence of sportspersons and Bollywood stars, nominated to Rajya Sabha by the president. While we are yet to hear from Gopichand, hopefully he will avoid falling into such controversies.
