Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani owned Reliance Industries has been keen to acquire Disney Plus Hotstar and the merging process is underway. Reliance owns Jio Cinema, a streaming platform of films and sports. In a surprising development, Reliance has decided to retain Disney Plus Hostar as the solo streaming platform after the merging of Disney and Jio Cinema. The content of Jio Cinema will be completely uploaded into Disney Plus Hostar and there will be no Jio Cinema in the future. Running two different platforms is hectic and not an easy task. Disney Plus Hotstar is taken as the primary platform as it has the best technological infrastructure.
Jio Cinema acquired the IPL Rights but IPL will be streamed on Disney Plus Hotstar. The entire HBO content will be back to Disney Plus Hotstar. In February, Reliance and Walt Disney decided to merge Star India and Viacom 18 with a deal of 8.5 billion USD. They will together have 100 channels along with the streaming platforms.
