After a month-long respite, University of Hyderabad plunged into unrest again today with students staging protest against vice chancellor Prof P Apparao, who returned to campus after a long leave. Apparao went on leave amid crisis on the campus triggered by the suicide of dalit research scholar, Rohit Vemula.
In fact, the situation limped back to normality on the campus only after Apparao was asked to go on leave reportedly by the centre. Today, upon his arrival at his office, irate students attacked VC office, reportedly vandalized it chanting slogan against him and demanding his resignation. The students are said to have attacked the car of vice chancellor and destroyed the furniture at his office ” Killer VC go back ” rent the air, according to eyewitness account. Some students who tried to rush towards VC bungalow were stopped by the police.
” Apparao is responsible for the suicide of Rohit and everyone knows it. The case is still pending before the court. Without notice, he returned from leave and convened the executive committee meeting. Along with deans and nominated members, some students were also present. This is objectionable,” striking students told media.
As the students’ lightning attack created tension on the campus, university deployed police personnel in a big way. Though under control, the situation is tense. Friends of Rohit are planning to revive the agitation on their first demand, the removal of VC, who reportedly mishandled the internal problems which, the students allege, led Rohit to take extreme step on January 17, 2016. Students also allege that continuance of Apparao as VC would not improve the image of the university.
