Hyderabad university student Rohit Vemula’ suicide rocked the Rajya Sabha today leading to two adjournments of the House amid uproar. BSP leader Mayawati raised the issue demanding the resignation ministers who were allegedly connected with the suicide of the dalit student.
Expressing apprehension about the biased outcome of the judicial commission appointed by HRD ministry, Mayawati asked the government to clarify if it had any proposal to include a dalit member to the commission so as to enable the commission to probe the circumstances that led Rohit to commit suicide impartially.
CPM member Yechuri Sitarama and Congress member Gulam Nabi Azas also supported Mayawati’s demand and wanted the government to respond to her question.
Mukhtar Abbas Naqui, minister of state for Parliamentary affairs, assured her that the government was ready for a debate followed by the statement from the minister concerned.
This failed to satisfy the BSP members, who trooped into the well raising slogans against the government.
Mayawati said she had asked a simple question and the government should respond in clear terms.
Mayawati alleged that the prestigious institutes such as HCU, Jamia Milia, Aligarh and JNU were being targeted by the RSS as they stand for different values. A concerted effort was going on to impose RSS ideology on educational institutes ever since BJP came to power at the centre.
HRD minister Smriti Irani alleged that the opposition was playing politics on the ‘dead child’ (Rohit Vemula). She said she was ready for the debate right now.
