Russia and India agree to set up 12 Nuclear Power Plants in India. Two of the Nuclear Power Plants are to come up in Andhra Pradesh.
Andhra Pradesh is all set to get two Nuclear Power Plants(NPP). This was the part of an agreement reached between India and Russia to build 12 Nuclear Power Plants in the country with the help of Russia. Agreement to this effect was signed during the current visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to that country.
Besides, beginning the works of a second power plant in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant (KNPP), in Tamilnadu, Russia has agreed to extend its technical know-how in building two NPPs in Andhra Pradesh.
In line with the intention of the Centre the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has already selected Kovvada in Srikakulam district. It needs 3,000 acres to start a 9,500 MW power plant. For this, the government has to acquire about 2,000 acres. However, there was resistance from the local people against the setting up a NPP. And, this has made the state government to delay in issuing a notification of setting up the NPP in the area.
In addition to this, the NPCIL is also in search of a suitable place and land to locate another NPP somewhere between Prakasam and Nellore Coastline. But, the state government has identified the area for a planned industrial and manufacturing corridor and intends to set up another minor port. This is in addition to the expansion of the existing Krishnapatnam Port. This is so far making the state government hesitant to give its approval to locate a NPP in between Nellore-Prakasam coastline.
