To make Hyderabad more working-woman friendly, Telangana state government is planning “she cabs” to ferry women from home to work places and vice versa.
This is second step the government has taken to provide safe travel in city from women, the first being the “She Teams”. In last October Hyderabad police have pressed 100 she-teams into service to keep watch at all places where women are generally harassed.
Each team comprises five woman cops and they are provided with cameras to record the activities of suspects and to keep vigil on them. She teams would bring the culprits to central crime station and counsel them in the presence of family members.
Now, the state government is gearing up to launch “She Cabs” from Independence Day (August 15).
The number of woman employees has gone up in Hyderabad due to the concentration of software companies. Though Hyderabad is relatively safe, some recent incidents have proved that danger is lurking in the hitech city area where movement of people is minimal during nights. This necessitated the TS to plan for the introduction of ‘by women and for women” taxis in city as well.
Revealing this transport minister Mahender Reddy said to begin with 15 She Caps would be operated.
Later, another batch of 50 She-Cabs would be made available, he added.
” Even though we have plans to launch about 100 “She-Cabs” the non-availability woman-drivers is putting paid to our plans,” the minister said.
The department, he said, had trained 18 women drivers last year and few more were being trained.
‘She-cabs would be available in all odd hours to women employees of software companies who generally work late into night, he said.
