Sri Lankan government is hunting down all the suspects having links with Islamic fundamentalists. It has arrested nearly 58 local suspects till now. The island nation has sounded high alert all over the country to prevent further such attacks. Prime Minister Ranil Vikramsinghe called upon the people to be fully prepared for any eventuality.
The death toll has reached 359 by Wednesday noon. Hundreds more victims are still recovering in hospitals. There are 10 Indian casualties while the total foreigners dead were 37. The authorities are investigating into the links of local extremists with the Islamic State and other terrorist organisations.
Indian intelligence authorities had alerted Sri Lanka about likely terror attacks a few weeks ago itself. The island nation couldn’t take immediate preventive steps on the security front. The country has a vibrant tourism as foreigners come here on vacation in large numbers. The terrorists picked them up as easy targets in the deadly attacks on luxury hotels.
