Tollywood’s 2024 First Half Round up

The first half of 2024 has come to an end and Tollywood witnessed a number of disappointments with fewer hits. Hanuman is the biggest surprise of the nation and the film surpassed Sankranthi biggies like Guntur Kaaram and Saindhav. Siddhu Jonnalagadda’s Tillu Square is the biggest hit of summer this year and several other summer releases fell flat. The film minted massive money at the ticket windows. After a dry summer, Prabhas’ Kalki 2898 AD released on June 27th and the film is doing fantastic business at the box-office. The film is doing great in all the languages of release.

Films like Naa Saami Ranga, Gaami, Ooru Peru Bhairavakona ended up as average grossers among the 2024 releases. Big Films like Guntur Kaaram, Saindhav, Eagle, Manamey, Yatra 2, Operation Valentine, Bhimaa, Family Star, Aa Okkati Adakku and Gangs of Godavari failed to live up to the expectations. Small films like Sundaram Master, Chaari 111, Ambajipeta Marriage Band, Om Bheem Bush, Geethanjali Malli Vachindi, Prasanna Vadanam, Krishnamma, Prathinidhi 2, Love Me, Bhaje Vaayu Vegam, Gam Gam Ganesha, Love Mouli, Satyabhama, Harom Hara, Music Shop Murthy failed to make an impact.

The first half of 2024 is not great except for a few hits and number of disappointments. Several big ticket films are releasing in the second half of 2024 and there are high hopes on these biggies.

Tollywood 2024 First Quarter Report

Tollywood had a decent first quarter for 2024. Sankranthi witnessed a tough fight and Hanuman was the surprise. The film emerged as a massive hit despite releases like Guntur Kaaram, Saindhav and Naa Saami Ranga. Prasanth Varma and Teja Sajja gained star status with the film’s success. Mahesh Babu managed to pull the crowds with Guntur Kaaram and Trivikram’s work was badly criticized. Considering the financials involved, the film cannot be called a hit. Venkatesh took action mode and his film Saindhav ended up as a massive debacle. Nagarjuna’s Naa Saami Ranga managed to bring audience to the theatres during the Sankranthi season.

Post Sankranthi, a bunch of small budget films released and none of them impressed the audience. Yatra 2 failed to get minimum footfalls. Ravi Teja delivered one more disaster through Eagle. Sundeep Kishan delivered a decent hit with Ooru Peru Bhairavakona. Ravi Teja’s production Sundaram Master featuring Viva Harsha also failed to impress the audience. Vennela Kishore’s interesting attempt Chari 111 ended up as a massive disaster. Varun Tej delivered one more disaster with Operation Valentine. The film was badly rejected by the audience.

Gopichand’s mass film Bhimaa got decent openings but the poor word of mouth killed the film completely. Vishwak Sen’s Gaami received appreciations and the film did decent at the box-office. Razakar received good appreciation but the audience showed no interest in the film. Sree Vishnu’s Om Bheem Bush ended up as a below average flick. Siddhu Jonnalagadda scored a super hit with Tillu Square and the film is going strong. March ended up on a great note with Tillu Square.

Among the dubbed films, Premalu impressed youth and made good revenues in urban regions. Rajamouli’s son SS Karthikeya released the Malayalam film in Telugu.

Trivikram to take a Long Break

Top director Trivikram suffered a major setback with Guntur Kaaram. His writing and directorial abilities were trolled badly. It was Mahesh Babu’s presence and performance that saved the film partially. Trivikram knew about the criticism that he received for Guntur Kaaram. No top actor is available as they have signed and lined up multiple films. Now, Trivikram is in plans to take a long break and make a strong comeback again.

He will start working on a new script later this year. Before this, he has films lined up on Sithara Entertainments and he would overlook their progress. There are strong speculations that he will produce films on his home banner Fortune Four Cinemas without the support of Sithara Entertainments. For now, Trivikram will take a long break from direction but he will continue to produce films.

Sree Leela and Thaman too got trolled after the Netflix release. Four individuals have been arrested after the primary investigation as per the update. The team of Guntur Kaaram was left in stress because of the negative wave against the film. Even the reviews were poor for the film.

The team did not meet the media or conduct a successmeet post release. Some of the buyers are losing big through the film. Guntur Kaaram is directed by Trivikram and Mahesh Babu, Sree Leela played the lead roles. While Mahesh Babu’s performance was well appreciated, Trivikram was badly trolled for his work and writing.

Guntur Kaaram received negative response from the first premiere shows across the Telugu states and USA. However, the film settled down and performed well in Andhra region. The film under performed in Nizam and USA territories. The film’s producer Naga Vamsi interacted with the media and he responded about the negative reviews and the numbers. “We have presented Guntur Kaaram as a mass entertainer but the film is a Trivikram’s family entertainer. I think we failed in presenting the film before the release. Also, screening Guntur Kaaram at 1 AM turned out to be a disadvantage. All our buyers are expected to reach break-even very soon. That is the reason, I am here before the media today” told Vamsi.

“A section of media and some handles in social media have been opposing the film from the shooting days and there are a lot of negative reviews for the film. But these did not impact the film. The other section of media supported the film. We will celebrate the success next week after Mahesh Babu garu returns. Trivikram sir also will be present for the bash along with the team and our distributors. I will invited the media that supported the film and the media that wrote negative about the film too” told Vamsi.

Guntur Kaaram has ended its first week with a worldwide distributor share of 86.5 Cr share. Gross of the film stands at 147 Cr. This is the second highest first week grosser for Mahesh Babu after Sarileru Neekevvaru which was also a Sankranti release. The performance of the film is a mixed big as it has fared differently in different areas. It has done below par business in Nizam, Ceeded , ROI & Overseas as distributors here are heading for huge losses whereas it has done decent to good business in Andhra (UA to Nellore) where distributors might end up with minor losses or breakeven which depends on producer compensating with the GST. Though the Sankranti festivities are almost over there will some leftovers and that might help the film this weekend to put decent numbers in Andhra.

Superstar Mahesh Babu and top director Trivikram teamed up for the third time with Guntur Kaaram and the film released during Sankranthi season. The film gained negative talk right from the first premiere show and it was Mahesh Babu who carried this badly written mass entertainer. Trivikram is directly trolled across social media circles for his lazy and outdated writing. Everyone wonders how Trivikram wrote so badly for Guntur Kaaram as he worked on the script for almost three years.

Even his benchmark dialogues went missing in Guntur Kaaram. Mahesh Babu is the only saviour of Guntur Kaaram and Thaman’s music too was not impressive. Trivikram is completely responsible for the poor response of Guntur Kaaram. Though the film performed better than Agnyaathavaasi, Trivikram’s writing work looked similar. The basic plot too was inspired from various Telugu films. One wonders if Trivikram is not spending ample time on the scriptwork as he is involved in various projects for stars of Telugu cinema. He is also supervising the products produced by Sithara Entertainments. He has to wake up soon before the stars miss him.

Mahesh Babu about smoking Beedi in Guntur Kaaram

Superstar Mahesh Babu is against smoking scenes and he strictly implemented the same in all his recent films. But in Guntur Kaaram, he is seen smoking a beedi in most of the episodes. During his recent interview, Mahesh revealed that the beedi used in Guntur Kaaram is an ayurvedic one and is made of clove leaves. They are not made of tobacco, told Mahesh Babu.

“I don’t smoke and I don’t encourage smoking also. I was given a real beedi during the initial days of shoot and I was not comfortable. I used to get headache and I informed Trivikram. Then they found a solution and arranged an ayurvedic beedi. I was comfortable with it. There is no tobacco and it comes with a mint flavour” explained Mahesh Babu. Guntur Kaaram directed by Trivikram released during Sankranthi season. Sree Leela and Meenakshi Chaudhary are the leading ladies in Guntur Kaaram.

Guntur Kaaram has an average extended weekend with a worldwide distributor share of 71.50 Cr, Gross of the film stands at 118.5 Cr. After a decent opening day, the film dropped on the second day and was flat on Sunday. It has shown some gains on Monday owing to the big Sankranti holiday but even that should have been much higher. The film should put up decent numbers in AP today owing to another Big holiday though Nizam is already noticing a drop in our hourly tracking.

Guntur Kaaram has taken an average opening in the Telugu States with a distributor share of 31.2 Cr. This is the highest opening ever for a Mahesh Starrer. The numbers for the film are actually disappointing considering the expectations from the trade for this combo. From the morning shows itself the film started with average occupancies and there was a drop in matinees. Evening and night shows have compensated a bit. The film has started with below-par occupancies for Day2 Noon Shows.

Superstar Mahesh Babu and top director Trivikram are teaming up for the third time with Guntur Kaaram. This mass actioner is high on expectations. Happening beauties Sree Leela and Meenakshi Chaudhary are the leading ladies and Thaman is the music director. Guntur Kaaram also has a strong emotional drama and Ramya Krishna, and Prakash Raj played other important roles. Haarika and Hassine Creations are the producers of this big-budget attempt. The film is heading for a record release all over and here is the review of Guntur Kaaram

Story:

Vasundhara, portrayed by Ramya Krishna, is a minister and the daughter of Vyra Venkata Swamy (Prakash Raj) . She divorces Satyam (Jayaram) and marries Rao Ramesh. She keeps elder son Ramana (Maheshbabu ) away from the family. Venkata Swamy and his associates attempt to coerce Ramana into signing a declaration renouncing any claims to the family inheritance. The plot unfolds around Ramana’s strategies to counter these tactics and explores the possibility of a reconciliation between mother and son.

Analysis :
Guntur Kaaram takes off as a family story contrary to top heroes’ commercial films. That is a good sign but that evaporates as soon as the film progresses. In the first half the director banks on Mahesh’s characterization heavily and the film is somewhat entertaining. The second half is shallow and disappointing This film is Trivikram’s poor work after Agnathavaasi.

Only two songs are appealing

Verdict :

“Guntur Kaaram” is a mediocre movie overall. The aspects that give it some appeal are Mahesh Babu’s portrayal, his dialogue delivery, and his dance. which managed to rescue the film to a degree. However, the second half of the movie is dull and negates the somewhat positive impact of the first half. Trivikram’s distinctive style is noticeably absent in this film. Additionally, in terms of production value, this film is notably the least expensive among Mahesh Babu’s films.

Guntur Kaaram is getting ready for a grand release on 12th of this month ie, tomorrow. The film has been sold for record rates for both Mahesh & Tivikram. Advance bookings are good for the film and it has got a ticket hike in AP & Nizam. Expectations at 360 are that the film can collect 40 Cr share in Telugu States on its opening day and 1.5 Million Premiers in the USA.

The combo of Mahesh Babu and Trivikram will do wonders at the box-office if the content is impressive. Their third collaboration Guntur Kaaram is all set for a grand release on January 12th. Dil Raju shares a great bonding with the team and the producer China Babu. He is distributing the film in Nizam region and he acquired the theatrical rights of Guntur Kaaram for Rs 45 crores. He watched the film today in a private screening and his review says that Guntur Kaaram is a Blockbuster.

Dil Raju himself shared the news with his close industry friends. The advance bookings for Guntur Kaaram are outstanding and the film is in the top slot in the Sankranthi race. Mahesh Babu, Sree Leela, Meenakshi Chaudhary, Ramya Krishna and Prakash Raj are the lead actors in this mass entertainer. Haarika and Hassine Creations are the producers. Apart from Guntur Kaaram, Venkatesh’s Saindhav, Nagarjuna’s Naa Saami Ranga and Teja Sajja’s Hanu Man are the other releases for this Sankranthi.

The grand pre-release event of Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram took place last evening in Guntur and a heap of fans were present at the event. Mahesh Babu turned emotional and he thanked his fans for their support. He said that they are his mother and father from now on and Mahesh recalled the memories with his father Superstar Krishna. Mahesh Babu’s wife Namrata Shirodkar penned an emotional post today on her social media page. She left the fans of Mahesh in praise and congratulated Mahesh.
