Best Tollywood films of 2023

It is a mixed bag for Telugu cinema in 2023. Several most awaited films ended up as duds while there are a bunch of surprise hits of the year. Here are the list of best films including money spinners at the Tollywood box-office for 2023:

January: Chiranjeevi’s Waltair Veerayya and Balakrishna’s Veerasimha Reddy ended up as money spinners because of the star cast and the Sankranthi holiday season. Both these films were produced by Mythri Movie Makers.

February: Dhanush’s bilingual Sir ended up as a super hit and the film made huge money. Venky Atluri directed this social drama. All other releases failed.

March: Dil Raju backed a small film titled Balagam and the film is a surprise hit of the year. Apart from minting money, Balagam also won numerous awards. Nani tested his luck with Dasara and the film too made good money. His transformation was well appreciated.

April: Virupaksha marked the right comeback for Sai Dharam Tej and the mystic thriller is the best film of summer season. No other film impressed the audience.

May: Unfortunately, all the May releases failed badly and the entire summer season got wasted.

June: Sree Vishnu’s Samajavaragamana is one more surprise hit of the year and the family crowds rushed to theatres to watch this comic entertainer.

July: Baby is a sensational hit and the film is also named as a cult classic. Anand Devarakonda and Vaishnavi Chaitanya emerged as stars with this Sai Rajesh directorial.

August: All the new releases fell flat and ended up as huge disappointments.

September: Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty is one more surprise hit of the year. Naveen Polishetty and Anushka played the lead roles in this breezy romantic drama.

October: MAD is one more small film that made decent money in theatres. Balakrishna’s Bhagavanth Kesari made good money during the Dasara season and it impressed the family audience. Vijay’s Leo made big money as per the financials involved.

November: Keeda Cola was loved by the multiplex audience and youth. Mangalavaram was one among the releases.

December: Ranbir Kapoor’s Animal is a super hit and it opened on a strong note in Telugu states. Nani’s Hi Nanna received appreciation for the emotional content. Prabhas’ Salaar released today and it opened on a strong note.

Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty has a good opening weekend worldwide with a distributor share of 12.60 Cr. Gross is around 26 Cr. After a low opening day, the film has shown good growth on Saturday & Sunday in the Domestic Markets. In Overseas the film is already a super hit and heading towards blockbuster status. Theatrical rights of the film overseas are valued at 5 Cr and it is already past that mark. The film is an own release in Domestic markets. Now it needs to be seen how the film will hold in weekdays as it will have an advantage of open run till 28th September.

Story :

Anvita ( Anushka ) is a famous chef in London. After the death of her mother, to break the loneliness, Anvita wants to have a baby of her own without a marriage nor physical relation. She travels to India to find a suitable man for the task and finds a standup comedian Siddhu ( Naveen Polishetty ) . After expressing her crazy idea, Siddhu shocks and rest of the film is how both parties act.

Analysis:

Miss Shetty Mr. Polishetty film starts off with Anvitha (Anushka) and her mother Jayasudha sentiment scenes. It is surprising to see these pathos scenes for 15 minutes right at the beginning. Screenplay wise this part could have been narrated in flashback. Once hero Naveen enters the proceedings,relief comes to audience . However, the comedy is not generated from the scenes, but throught standup jokes. The core point, Anvita wants a baby without having sex, has been told in partially convincing manner. Overall First half ends mediocre. Post-Interval, for a 45 minutes the film is engaging with Naveen’s good comedy timing. After that , again movie dips into flat boring mode. There is no justification for why anvitha changes her mind about giving father of child status to the hero.

Naveen’s characterization is the only saving grace of the film. Nirav Shah’s cinematography is pretty good and gives perfect urban look for the film. Radhan’s songs fail to impress but background score is adequate.

Not an universal appeal story

Verdict:

MSMP film works for youngsters to an extent. Mr. Naveen Polishetty is the saving grace of the film with his ease in comedy and performance. The first half is mediocre and the climax is weak. Songs are big letdown. Overall, you may watch it if you like Polishetty !

September 2023 heading for a Big Bet

August 2023 was a disappointing month for Telugu cinema. None of the straight Telugu films made decent money except Karthikeya’s Bedurulanka 2012. Rajinikanth’s Jailer was a smashing hit and the film made huge money in Telugu states. September is packed with a bunch of biggies. Several Telugu, Tamil and Hindi films are heading for release in September. The month opens with Kushi featuring Vijay Deverakonda and Samantha. The duo needs a smashing hit to bounce back and the film is carrying good expectations.

After the super success of Pathaan, Shah Rukh Khan is back with Jawan, an action thriller directed by Atlee. The film releases on September 7th. Miss Shetty Mr Polishetty featuring Anushka and Naveen Polishetty will release on September 8th and the trailer looks breezy. For the Vinayaka Chavithi weekend, Ram’s Skanda, Lawrence’s Chandramukhi 2 and Vishal’s Mark Antony are hitting the screens. Prabhas and Prashanth Neel’s Salaar is heading for release on September 28th. This is the biggest ever pan-Indian release of the year and the theatricals are valued high.
