Police foil Congress’ march to Telangana Assembly

0

The police on Friday foiled an attempt by the main opposition Congress to lay siege to the Telangana State Legislative Assembly on the first day of the winter session to demand protection of the interests of farmers.

Police detained hundreds of Congress workers coming to the city from the surrounding districts.

Tension prevailed near the Assembly as Congress leaders and workers tried to advance towards the building to lodge their protest against the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government for what they call its failures to come to the rescue of distressed farmers.

A large number of protesters led by state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy began a ‘chalo Assembly’ march from the party headquarters Gandhi Bhavan. Carrying party flags and raising anti-government slogans, they tried to proceed towards the Assembly but were stopped by the police. There was heated argument between two sides.

As the protesters refused to budge, police personnel physically lifted them to the waiting vehicles and shifted them to another place.

Congress leader Uttam Kumar Reddy slammed the TRS government for arresting peaceful protesters. He alleged that the government was adopting an undemocratic attitude towards protests by the opposition.

He said farmers were committing suicides as they were not getting Minimum Support Price (MSP) but the government was indifferent to their problems.

He said Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had failed to honour the promises made on the floor of the House. He asked the government to fulfil the promise to pay interest that got accumulated on farm loans due to faulty implementation of the crop loan waiver scheme. He said crop loan waiver did not benefit the farmers and they were “still suffering”.

He claimed that during the last three years more than 3,500 farmers committed suicide under the TRS regime and most of them were cotton farmers.

Meanwhile, the farmers’ issue rocked the Assembly on the first day. As soon as the session began, the opposition parties demanded that it be taken up for debate by suspending the question hour.

However, Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy, who was in the chair, went ahead with the question hour and rejected the adjournment motions moved by Congress, BJP and other opposition parties.

The legislators of opposition parties continued their protest during the question hour. The Deputy Speaker later adjourned the House till Monday.

The ruling party has hit back at the Congress for trying to stall the House and for creating trouble outside the House. Industries Minister K.T. Rama Rao said the government was ready for debate on any issue but the Congress party was only keen in stalling the proceedings.

Rama Rao said though the Congress party had demanded only a 20-day session, the government was ready for a 50-day session so that the House could discuss all issues.

Telangana Minister of Mining K T Rama Rao vented ire on Congress party for falsely accusing TRS party in Sircilla Sand mining issue and for purchasing of Innova vehicles. Terming Congress as Scamgress, he said that the opposition party is following the “loot, jhoot and scoot” policy. He alleged that it is unfitting for Uttam Kumar Reddy, Digvijay Singh and Jairam Ramesh to speak against him without any proof.

KTR said that in Drugs case, Digvijay is tweeting without any evidences. When the government pursued for proofs, the congress leader allegedly said they do not have any details in this regard.

KTR said that the government purchased 300 Innova vehicles as per the DGSND rates in 2014 as a part of modernisation of police department. He said that the UPA government and the previous state governments have purchased vehicles using the same rates. Speaking about Sircilla sand mafia allegations by Uttam Kumar Reddy, TRS leader said that from year 2007 to 2014, revenue on sand was never beyond Rs 10 crore. But after the TRS government came to power, revenue from sand was Rs 378 crore in 2015 and Rs 600 crore in 2016. He accused the Congress of looting as much as Rs 4000crore in eight years through illegal sand mining. Congress leaders detained as protest intensifies over ‘Dharna Chowk’

0

Police detained leaders of Telangana unit of Congress party here on Monday as the opposition intensified its protest over shifting of ‘Dharna Chowk’, a popular venue of protests in Hyderabad.

Tension prevailed at Tank Bund in the heart of the city as several leaders sat on satyagraha at the state of B.R. Ambedkar but police evicted them on the ground that there is no permission for the protest.

Telangana state Congress chief Uttam Kumar Reddy, former ministers Bhatti Vikramarka, Mohammed Ali Shabbir, D. Nagender and former MPs V. Hanumantha Rao and Anjan Kumar Yadav were among those detained and shifted to different police stations.

The Congress party had called for the protest to demand Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government to revive ‘Dharna Chowk’ at Indira Park in the heart of the city.

Uttam Kumar Reddy alleged that TRS government is suppressing the voice of opposition by shifting ‘Dharna Chowk’ to the city outskirts. “This move is undemocratic. The government is not ready to tolerate the voice of dissent,” he told reporters.

The Congress leaders said TRS chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao, who organised many protests in the city including Million March during Telangana movement, was not snatching the rights of the opposition parties.

The protest by the Congress came a day after leaders of Dharna Chowk Protection Committee launched a month long relay hunger strike at the Communist Party of India (CPI) headquarters, Mukhdoom Bhavan here.

The committee comprising leaders of CPI, CPI-M, other Left parties and mass organisations denounced the attitude of the Chief Minister and said the government was denying the democratic rights of the people to protest.

Noted educationalist and former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Chukka Ramaiah said that it was unfortunate that Chandrasekhar Rao, who participated in many agitations programmes and meetings at Indira Park during the Telangana movement, now does not want that very Chowk to exist.

‘Dharna Chowk’ had been the venue of thousands of protests by political parties, people’s organisations, students’ groups, employees’ unions and others for over two decades.

Chief Minister Chandrasekhar Rao had last week defended the police move to shift ‘Dharna Chowk’ to the city outskirts saying that that some parties were deliberately creating problems in the name of protests. He also stated that the venue doesn’t make any difference as the opposition will still be able to highlight the issues and bring them to the government’s notice thanks to the coverage by the media.

Last month, leaders of all opposition parties had come together to meet Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan Rao and submit a memorandum protesting the government’s move.

T-Cong mulls PIL against ‘Water Grid’ corruption

0

T-Congress is planning to file a PIL in High Court on Water Grid project taken up Telangana government for the lack of transparency and the alleged corruption in the involved in the appointment of contractor for the massive project. TPCC president Uttam Kumar Reddy said the TRS government had violated all standard norms of conceiving and executing the water grid project indulging in massive corruption. He said there secrecy shrouded the project all levels. The Congress leaders also appealed to NABARD and HUDCO to be cautious in granting loans as this project lacked transparency and full of manipulations and corruption.

“father and son(chief minister KCR and son IT minister KT Ramarao) joined hands to favor one particular that is close to their family . This is unprecedented peculiarly and happend only Telangana,” he said. There was no information on what the actual utility of the project was, he said. “The detailed project report is not kept in public domain and inaccessible even to opposition parties. The project value has been escalated by more than 40%,” the PCC president added.

Stating that the government was not responding to the Congress demand to make the detailed project Report (DPR) public, Uttam said the whole project appears to have been conceived only to indulge in massive corruption and amass illegal wealth. “The project tender norms have been framed to favor a particular company which is close to the family of KCR, so that the so called company and their proxy outfit would benefit from the contract,” he said.

The Congress party, he said, was doing deep research and analysis of the whole project and surely would expose the corruption of the government in the on-going assembly session. ” we promise to the people of Telangana that we will not leave TRS and their corruption go scot-free,” Uttam said.Ex MP Mallu Ravi and Dr Sravan Dasoju, Chief were also present in press conference.

Why did DS Bite His Tongue in PC?

0

D Srinivas, the third PCC president to leave the Congress in the recent past,  developed cold feet to criticize the party for marginalizing him which ultimately forced him to embrace TRS. (The other PCC presidents who defected to other parties were K Kesava Rao and Botsa Satyanarayana.) In the press conference, Srinivas restricted his criticism to a single remark against Digvijay Singh, AICC general secretary, in-charge of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, who he said a cheat. Everybody thought he would excoriate the party he was leaving.

Congress leaders such as V Hanumantha Rao, Ponnam Prabhakar etc. have kept ready their arsenal to attack D Srinivas, in case he unleashes abuses against the party leadership, especially Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi.

Everybody knows D Srinivas was the principal beneficiary from Telangana when the Congress was in power at the centre and state. He was made minister and PCC president. He got his son Sanjay appointed Nizambad Mayor. There were complaints about his style of functioning. His distribution of B-Forms to party candidate from his residence instead of Gandhi Bhavan, party headquarters, had attracted criticism.

DS was the only senior Congress leader from Telangana who never uttered a single word supporting the Telangana, when in power. According to a senior leader, his marginalization in the party was not without reason. And many leaders were waiting to pounce upon him the moment he uttered a single word against the Congress party. The Congress had kept ready some of the candidates to reveal who they got the B-from from his son Sanjay.

Sensing the mood of his colleagues, he decided to confine his press conference just to reveal his intension to support chief minister KCR who is fighting with Andhra Pradesh for Telangana rights.

Consequently, the verbal fight has been averted. T-Congress leaders, N Uttam Kumar Reddy (PCC president), K Jana Reddy (Opposition leader), Bhatti Vikramarkha Mallu (PCC working president) and Md Ali Shabbir (former minister) softened their stand against their former colleague. They simply said people would not welcome his decision as he had enjoyed immense power and pelf. They dismissed the DS’ charge that he was humiliated in the party.  His decision was reeked of opportunism and he was so power hungry that he could not live even for a month without power and defected to TRS only to get some position, they said adding that his resignation won’t affect the any manner.
