Under the ‘Mahakutami’ seat sharing, the Congress has given Serilingampally seat to the TDP considering the predominant Seemandhra voters here. Arekapudi Gandhi won from this segment on TDP ticket in 2014 but now he has shifted his loyalties to the TRS party which has given him its ticket to contest December election. TDP is fielding local strongman Venigalla Ananda Prasad who is economically strong and has widespread connections.
Congress former MLA M. Bhikshapathi Yadav was asking for the ticket and he has filed nomination as a rebel of Mahakutami. Congress high command entered the scene and convinced him to withdraw the nomination. He is now fully cooperating with the TDP nominee. If Bhikshapathi effectively supports TDP candidate, there are ample chances of Mahakutami win in Serilingampally because of his strong presence. Bhikshapati had won from this segment in 2009 over his rival Arekapudi Gandhi, who then contested on TDP ticket.
After its formation, Serilingampally assembly constituency has witnessed two elections – in 2009 and 2014. Congress won once and TDP once. This time, Congress and TDP have joined forces to counter the ruling TRS candidate Gandhi. TDP nominee is confident that he will have big advantage because of the new found unity among Mahakutami parties to oust KCR government this time.
TDP has strong following in the segment as it got 75,904 majority in 2014 elections over nearest rival TRS. In that election, Congress stood in third place.
