Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has expressed serious concerns that South Indian states would face significant losses if Lok Sabha constituencies are redistributed based on current population figures. At JAC meeting on delimitation, Stalin called for unified opposition to this process, criticizing the Modi government’s statements on the issue as confusing.
The meeting, chaired by Stalin, saw participation from 14 representatives from five states. Telangana CM Revanth Reddy, TPCC President Mahesh Goud, and BRS leaders KTR and Vinod Kumar attended. Other participants included Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, Akali Dal representatives, and Karnataka CM DK Shivakumar.
Despite being invited, representatives from Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress did not attend the meeting.
The meeting discussed the impact of delimitation on states with higher literacy rates and growth. Stalin called this meeting “historic” and highlighted that redistribution based on current population would reduce South Indian representation in Parliament, weakening their ability to voice concerns and fight for central funds.
Stalin warned that this change would negatively impact educational opportunities for students, reduce farmer support, endanger cultural traditions, and undermine social justice. He expressed concern that they could become “citizens who have lost political power in their own country.”
BJP cadres across Tamil Nadu protested against the meeting, wearing black clothes and questioning why Stalin doesn’t hold similar meetings with Karnataka and Kerala regarding Cauvery and Mullaperiyar river disputes..
