In an irony of sorts, two universities, which are labeled as the centres of ‘anti-national movements’ are adjudged as the best central universities in India. The Jawaharlal University of New Delhi and Central University of Hyderabad earned the ranks three and four respectively in the category of universities. The two universities, which have been in the eye of the storm, for being too unconventional, are facing disturbance following the police cases of sedition in the case of JNU and politics excessive and violent crackdown in HCU.
The list, ‘India Rankings 2016’ had been announced by none other than union HRD minister Smruti Irani. The ministry of Human Resources and Development this afternoon released the lists of top ten institution in India, all categories, Technology, Management, Pharmacy and Universities. The ranking has been accorded under National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIFR) program, a first of its kind effort in India to measure the merit of the central institutes of higher learning. The list was validated by National Bureau of Accreditation.
When the ranking was being announced a movement was raging demanding the removal of vice chancellor Apparao Podile. Many students and leaders of Left parties tried to go on march to Raj Bhavan, but the police foiled their attempt. The police arrested the leaders and shifted them to Goshamahal police station. Recently, union finance minister Arun Jaitley remarked that the unrest in the two universities was the result of some ultra-left and jihadi elements.
Coming back to the ranking, among the technology side, Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) Madras stood first, followed by IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur. Among the IIMs, Banglore occupied to covetous top slot followed. Among the institutes and universties, India Institute of science, Bangalore ranked best in India, followed by Institute of Chemical Technology , JNU and HCU in two, three and four ranks respectively.
