Senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu on Tuesday filed his nomination for the post of Vice President in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other ministers.
After filing his nomination, Naidu expressed gratitude to all those who supported him.
“I am thankful to Narendra Modiji, (BJP President) Amit Shahji and all the NDA parties, including AIADMK, Telangana Rashtra Samiti, YSR Congress and Indian National Lok Dal, for extending their support. Some more friends are expected to support me,” Naidu said.
He said there is no need for him to campaign as all the MPs who are going to vote know him too well.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu’s Teleugu Desam Party, Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao’s TRS and the rebel AIADMK faction led by former Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam have extended their support to Naidu.
The 68-year-old is comfortably placed against opposition-backed Gopalkrishna Gandhi as the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has a clear majority in the Lok Sabha.
The Vice President is elected by an electoral college comprising members of both the Houses of Parliament, including nominated members.
The scrutiny of nominations for the August 5 election will be on Wednesday.
