Andhra Pradesh government today decided to name the ground floor of the super specialty veterinary hospital constructed at Labbipet, Vijayawada after Nandamuri Harikrishna. While the whole hospital is named after Nandamuri Taraka Ramarao, ground floor will be called Nandamuri Harikrishana Block. This is in recognition to the contribution he made to the construction of the hospital, which was started in 2008, when Mandali Buddha Prasad was Animal Husbandry minister during YS Rajasekhar Reddy regime. But, in the following years, the construction got stuck due to paucity of funds. According to sources, the then collector approached Nandamuri Harikirshna, who was then Rajya Sabha member for contribution from his MPLADS funds. Harikrishna, basically a kindhearted man, immediately agreed to release about Rs. 1.70 crore from his MPLADS fund, leading to the completion of the construction.
Harikrishna was Rajya Sabha MP between 2008 and 2013. To register his protest against the decision of the Congress to bifurcate the state of Andhra Pradesh to create Telangana separate state, he resigned from the upper house. On August 22, 2013 Harikrishna personally met Chairman Hamid Ansari and registered protest, and later delivered his resignation letter.
He made an emotive speech on the day. ” Congress killed the Telugu spirit by its decision to divide the state. The only motive behind the decision was to make Rahul Gandhi next Prime Minister. My father stood firmly for Telugu people. His dream is shattered by the divisive Congress. I can’t continue in the house,” he said.
Unfortunately, his sacrifice went unrecognised. He is not in the reckoning of TDP .He was made neither Rajya Sabha member again nor an MLC. Now he has to content himself with the ground floor of a veterinary hospital.
