Vettaiyan Movie Review
Telugu360 Rating: 2.75/5
There is a popular quote that says “Justice delayed is justice denied”. There are several encounters that take place due to the pressure. This also happens because of the huge outrage. Superstar Rajinikanth’s Vettaiyan is a social drama that discusses several burning ideas in the society. Jai Bhim director TJ Gnanavel is the director and the film has a supporting cast like Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, Rana Daggubati and others in important roles. Here is the review of Vettaiyan:
Story:
Adiyan (Rajinikanth) is an encounter specialist who works as an SP in Kanyakumari region. Saranya (Dushara Vijayan) works as a government teacher in a village. As per the complaint of Saranya, Adiyan encounters a gang who are into drug mafia. Soon, Saranya gets brutally raped and killed. The cops arrest the suspect but he escapes from their custody. This creates a huge outrage among the public. Adiyan enters the scene to encounter the culprit. The rest of Vettaiyan is all about the rest of the story and the roles of Patrick (Fahadh Faasil) and Nataraj (Rana Daggubati) in Vettaiyan.
Analysis:
TJ Gnanavel who directed critically acclaimed Jai Bhim has directed Vettaiyan. This film is also a hard hitting social drama. The film starts off with some of the videos that are shot in government schools which are the base of Vettaiyan. Rajinikanth makes his entry as an Encounter Specialist and this brings the needed momentum among the audience. The introduction action episode and the song are a perfect treat for Rajinikanth fans. The real story unfolds with Saranya’s episode. The first half of Vettaiyan is interesting and passable without any boring stuff. The interval twist is predictable but the audience will wait for the second half.
The second half of Vettaiyan starts with the conflict point. The second half is an investigative thriller and the director should have focused more on the writing part. The second half of Vettaiyan is completely predictable. The director should have narrated Vettaiyan in a routed manner but as it is a Rajinikanth’s film, Vettaiyan got stuffed with action, commercial elements. The director also tried hard to add an emotion with the role of Pattrick (Fahad Faasil) and it was decent. The lift sequence between Rajinikanth and Rana Daggubati is impressive. The climax has an overdose of a social message. Though the director’s idea was to narrate about the education system, the episode sounded like a tv debate show. But the episode was narrated without any diversions.
Performances:
Rajinikanth has his own mannerisms and swag when it comes to his films. He did Vettaiyan in his own style with perfection. But the film should be seen as a director’s movie and not Rajinikanth’s film. Amitabh Bachchan gets a powerful role and he has done justice to his role. He adds dignity to the role. Fahadh Faasil gets an interesting role and he has done his assignment with perfection. Rana Daggubati has done many such roles in the past and his personality is a plus for the role. Manju Warrier has a crisp role and the actress has done it well. Dushara Vijayan has been natural in her part. Rao Ramesh and Kishore have done their parts well.
Vettaiyan is a technically sound film. The background score by Anirudh lives up to the expectations and it elevates all the important episodes of the film. The cinematography work sounds good throughout the film. The editing should have been sharp enough and the second half has to be chopped. Some of the dialogues by Rajinikanth are good. If the audience enters into the auditorium without expectations, Vettaiyan makes a decent one time watch.
