The Andhra Pradesh State Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu approved proposals to rename the airports in the state.
The Renigunta airport near Tirupati in Chittor district will be renamed as Sri Venkateswara International Airport. The Gannavaram Airport near Vijayawada will be renamed as Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Amaravati International Airport.
The state government will send the proposal to the Centre for approval. The meeting also took decisions regarding setting up a Greenfield airport at Orvakallu in Kurnool District. They decided to hand over the required land at basic price to the Bhogapuram Airport Authority. It also approved 600 acre land allocation for the same.
After giving a new name to the Gannavaram airport at NTR aiport, we are yet to see if Chandrababu will pursue renaming the domestic terminal at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad.
Meanwhile an online petition floated by the Muslim Professionals Network(MPN) of India, demanding to rename Rajiv Gandhi International Airport(RGIA) after Hyderabad’s founder Quli Qutub Shah.
