It is well known that Sardar Gabbar Singh was sold for sky high prices across all areas. Some of these prices have exceeded even those of ‘Baahubali’, even though SGS does not enjoy the same kind of pre-release hype that Baahubali did.
So why did people pay such high prices for the film? Even if the film does extremely well, chances of making a profit at these rates are extremely low. Forget about profits, the chance of breaking even itself is not very favourable.
While most distributors are banking on the summer holidays and the success of ‘Gabbar Singh’, there are a few who are doing it only for the obligation. Take for example the Vizag distributor Kranthi Reddy. He is a Mega family loyalist and a very senior distributor who has been active since Chiranjeevi’s days.
Pawan Kalyan reportedly offered the film to Kranthi Reddy despite the presence of competition. The distributor was thrilled by this gesture and felt obligated to pick up the film even if the mathematics didnt add up. The film was picked up for 7.4 Crores for Uttarandhra, which is unheard of.
When asked about it, Kranthi Reddy is very clear. “I may lose a crore or two. But I will be in the good books of Pawan Kalyan and that is all that matters for me”, he reportedly told his friends.
Well, as long as he knows what he is getting into, who can complain.
