In 2014, Nara Chandrababu Naidu came to power by promising loan waiver to farmers. He implemented that promise very half-heartedly. Restrictions were imposed. Loan waiver was limited up to only Rs. 1.5 lakh. The overall burden came down to Rs. 24,000 cr but Naidu did not waive this at once. He only paid three installments but left two installments (about Rs. 8,000 cr) pending in the last two years of his regime. He chose his own political convenience and diverted these funds for schemes like Pasupu Kumkuma women scheme and Annadata Sukheebhava. Consequently, his pre-election schemes did not create any additional vote bank while Naidu also lost trust of the farmers who felt cheated regarding loan waiver.
In 2019, YS Jaganmohan Reddy came to power by promising all-round welfare to all sections of society, right from farmers to poor women to youth. His rule in the last four months revealed how political vendetta is more important than farmers’ welfare for the present government. Jagan is not paying the two farm loan waiver installments to the farmers. His government asks why should it pay something for which Naidu is responsible? If that is the case, analysts are asking Jagan why he is using the same Secretariat built by Naidu in Amaravati. Why is Jagan sitting even in the same CM chair that once Naidu adorned? It is clear now that Jagan is doing greater harm to farmers. Questions are being asked whether Andhra farmers have no choice but to get deeper into debts and commit suicides finally.
