Amid lot of opposition criticism, the BJP got the controversial Triple Talak bill passed in the Lok Sabha. Then the questions arose why the Modi government is so firm on this bill despite opposition from many opposition parties especially the Congress and the MIM. It is well known the BJP has a communal branding but it has not benefited much because of its targeted Hindu vote bank is largely divided between different parties.
By getting the Talak bill, the BJP is aiming to hit two birds at one shot. It is will polarise more sections of Hindu populations in favour of it while drawing support though minimal from the women sections of the minorities. The BJP argues the Triple Talak should be gone since it is being misused. They are changing wives just like they change clothes because of this and which is why such arbitrary practice is nullified even in several Islamic countries.
However, MIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi demanded the bill be sent for examination thoroughly by a Select Committee of the Parliament. Opposition leaders felt the bill will target muslim men eventually as it awards three years imprisonment if any one used talak practice to divorce his wife. The Congress, Trinamool Congress, Rashtriya Janata Dal, AIADMK and other parties staged walk out from the House after expressing their protest. Law Minister Ravi Sankar Prasad said it was not aimed at targeting any particular religion but only to ensure justice, safety and respect to muslim women.
