India’s space agency, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), is all set to achieve a remarkable milestone with the launch of its 100th rocket this Wednesday. This achievement highlights ISRO’s journey from competing with global space agencies to setting new benchmarks for itself. Known for its cost-effective and efficient space missions, ISRO has grown into one of the world’s leading space organizations.

In its early days, ISRO struggled to conduct even one rocket launch per year. However, over the years, it has significantly improved its capabilities, now conducting between 4 to 10 launches annually. The agency is now working towards increasing this number to 15 launches per year. To support this goal, ISRO is developing advanced infrastructure at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SHAR) in Sriharikota. Reports indicate that 80% of the required facilities are already in place.

ISRO recently made headlines with another groundbreaking achievement. On December 30, 2024, the agency successfully launched two satellites into orbit using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV-C60). Following the launch, ISRO accomplished the challenging task of docking the two satellites, named SpaDeX-1A and SpaDeX-1B, in space. This feat made India the fourth country in the world, after the USA, Russia, and China, to master satellite docking technology.

The docking process, which began on January 16, 2025, involved multiple attempts due to technical challenges. However, ISRO’s persistence paid off as the satellites were successfully brought within 3 meters of each other and docked. This achievement showcases India’s growing expertise in advanced space technologies.

The upcoming launch of the GSLV-F15 rocket marks ISRO’s 100th mission, a testament to its relentless pursuit of excellence. This milestone not only celebrates ISRO’s past achievements but also sets the stage for future advancements in space exploration. With its focus on innovation and cost-efficiency, ISRO strengthens India’s position as a global space power.
