Moving sensitively, Narendra Modi government is making attempts to give up Haj subsidy given to Muslim pilgrims in the form of discounted air fares on Air India. The Minority Affairs Minister has constituted a six-member panel to look into the efficacy and viability of this subsidy. Interestingly, this subsidy was first introduced by Atal Bihari Vajpayee government.

Incidentally, the move comes close on the heels of Saudi Arabia raising India’s Haj quota by about 34,000, to take it to around 1.70 lakh, taking the total number of pilgrims allowed to do the annual pilgrimage.

However, the ministry has clarified that the setting up of this committee does not mean that the government has any plan to scrap the subsidy. The ministry sources affirmed that the intention was to make an assessment and approach the subject accordingly. The haj subsidy issue has been a matter of debate for long and was dwelt upon by even the Congress-led UPA. Back in 2012, the Supreme Court had directed the government to end the practice.

Meanwhile, AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi asked the government to abolish the subsidy for the Haj pilgrimage. He Owaisi has been demanding the abolition of the subsidy for the Haj pilgrims as he felt that the Muslims don’t need subsidy for their scared pilgrimage.
